French Open champ Krejcikova nervous about switch to grass on Wimbledon debut

Newly-crowned French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova said she was a bundle of nerves after she entered the main draw at Wimbledon for the first time in her career as she is still finding her feet on grass.

Unseeded in the singles at Roland Garros, Krejcikova took the Grand Slam by storm by becoming the first player in over two decades to win both the singles and doubles titles in the same year.

A claycourt and doubles specialist, Krejcikova won the doubles at Wimbledon in 2018 but now enters the singles main draw as the 14th seed at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

“I feel actually quite nervous. I cannot really put the good words together because all of this is very new and all of this is really exciting and special,” she told reporters on Saturday ahead of her first round match against Clara Tauson.

“Also, it’s stressful. I didn’t expect this to happen, now I’m here… Switching fast from clay to grass, all of this is new, all of this is different.

“I really don’t know what to do on grass yet… I don’t really know how to use my shots. I still have some time to find out.”

Krejcikova said her life has changed since winning at Roland Garros, with fans lining up for her autograph when she returned to the Czech Republic to recharge.

But the 25-year-old is not looking to be bogged down by high expectations and is keeping her feet firmly on the ground with one goal — to “enjoy tennis”.

“I don’t think that I have extra confidence, I just take it as it is. It’s very nice that I was able to make my dream come true, but also on the other hand there are so many other girls that are playing so well,” Krejcikova said.

“I just have to come back on the ground, work hard again, just try to improve because otherwise I won’t be playing these tournaments and I won’t be playing these players for upcoming years.

“I feel that people see me differently. I think that they have maybe higher expectations… But for me right now I just feel that I shouldn’t put any pressure on myself any more. I’ve pretty much achieved everything that I’ve always wanted.”
